Robotics and robot systems have been, and remain, at the forefront of technological and industrial development. The development of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning techniques has enabled robots and robotic systems to evolve further and improve their operational performance and awareness. Both themes are at the core of this new programme.
The James Watt School of Engineering has created a well-equipped Robotics Teaching Laboratory where most of the robotics project and practical teaching will take place. The combination of research-led teaching and well-equipped laboratory facilities will provide you with a valuable learning experience that will strengthen your knowledge development and help in your future career.

Programme structure
You will study the same courses in the first three years whether you are on the BEng or MEng degree programme. Both embed creativity to develop world-changing engineers.
Year 1
The first year will follow the common curriculum of core courses delivered to all engineering programmes (such as mathematics, dynamics, materials and thermodynamics), along with specialised courses in electronics, manufacturing and engineering skills. These provide the foundation for the study in robotics and artificial intelligence in the years to follow.
Years 2 and 3
In year 2 you will further develop your skills in mathematics, dynamics and electronics. You will also study key skills in digital and analogue electronics, systems theory, embedded processor, programming, and electromagnetism and power electronics. These courses will prepare you for the interdisciplinary studies that form the Honours years curriculum. You will be introduced to engineering and team skills.
Year 3 will enhance the knowledge of dynamics and system theory through the study simulation, control, dynamics and communications, which are crucial in the study of robotics. You will study advanced programming and software engineering as the basis for the artificial intelligence theme. In addition you will study power engineering and electromagnetic compatibility which are essential for any robotic system.
Years 4 and 5
In year 4 the core courses are in robotics, machine learning and AI. You will be able to tailor your degree by choosing appropriate optional courses.
For the BEng, you will undertake an individual project in year 4 which will cover robotic & AI themes.
For the MEng, the 4th year will involve team projects instead of the final year project. In both degree paths, these project based courses will enable you to develop transferable skills that are needed for your future career in engineering.
The first half of year 5 involves the individual project placement, which could be an industrial or research project. In the second half, you will take more advanced options to develop your skills and knowledge in the areas of robotics and AI, along with options to diversify into other complimentary areas of study.

You will be able to apply to spend one year of your academic studies abroad at an accredited partner university. MEng students will also be able to work on their final-year project at overseas institutions.

- Additional requirements: Higher Mathematics and Physics or Engineering Science at AA. (AB or BA may be considered).

- MEng: 38 (6,6,6 HL)
- Additional requirements: HL Mathematics (Analysis & Approaches) and Physics. (SL6 can be accepted for either Mathematics or Physics).

For applicants whose first language is not English, the University sets a minimum English Language proficiency level.
English language requirements
International English Language Testing System (IELTS) Academic module (not General Training)
- 6.5 with no sub-test under 6.0.
- Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Applicants must meet the overall and subtest requirements using a single test
- IELTS One Skill Retake accepted.

All stated English tests are acceptable for admission to this programme:
TOEFL (ib, my best or athome)
- 90 with minimum R 20, L 19, S 19, W 23.
- Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Combined scores from two tests taken within 6 months of each other can be considered.
PTE (Academic)
- 60 with minimum 59 in all sub-tests.
- Tests must have been taken within 2 years 5 months of start date. Combined scores from two tests taken within 6 months of each other can be considered.
Glasgow International College English Language (and other foundation providers)
- 65%.

For international students, the Home Office has confirmed that the University can choose to use these tests to make its own assessment of English language ability for visa applications to degree level programmes. The University is also able to accept an IELTS test (Academic module) from any of the 1000 IELTS test centres from around the world and we do not require a specific UKVI IELTS test for degree level programmes. We therefore still accept any of the English tests listed for admission to this programme.

The University's School of Modern Languages and Cultures offers a range of Pre-sessional courses to bring you up to entry level. The course is accredited by BALEAP, the UK professional association for academic English teaching.

If you require a Tier 4 student visa, your qualification must be one of the secure English language tests accepted by UK Border Agency:

Visa requirements and proof of English language level
It is a visa requirement to provide information on your level of English based on an internationally recognised and secure English language test. All test reports must be no more than 2 years old. A list of these can be found on the UK Border Agency website. If you have never taken one of these tests before, you can get an initial idea of your level by using the Common European Framework self-assessment grid which gives you a level for each skill (e.g. listening B1/writing B2 etc.) However, please note that this is not a secure English language test and it is not sufficient evidence of your level of English for visa requirements.

Career prospects
The robotics industry is wide and rapidly growing due to the large number of robotic systems and application areas. This has created a need for engineers with the required skills related to robot and robotic system design and development. In addition, graduates with knowledge of artificial intelligence and machine learning are become more sought after as more industries seek to introduce these techniques into their product lines, design and manufacturing processes.

This was a new programme for 2024 entry and accreditation will be sought after the first cohort of students has graduated.

How to apply
Full-time students must apply through the Universities & Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS).
SQA applicants who are eligible for our Widening Participation programmes are encouraged to participate in one or more of these programmes, including Summer School, to support your application and the transition to higher education.
International students to Arts, Engineering, Law, Nursing, Science, and Social Sciences can also apply using The Common Application: however, if applying to more than one UK university, we recommend using UCAS. Applications to Dentistry, Education, Medicine, and Veterinary Medicine must be made through UCAS.
