Research interests

My research background is in synaptic plasticity, neuromodulation, neuromuscular ageing and locomotor network modulation. The nervous system is made up of billions of nerve cells (neurons) making up complex networks and pathways that control almost every function in every part of the body. Contrary to the classical text book picture of neurons and neural networks, they are highly dynamic, highly plastic and undergo both structural and biochemical changes during both their physiological and pathophysiological processes. My research to date has focused on understanding the cellular mechanisms of such changes in order to better understand neuronal and network function.  This understanding has applications to spinal cord injury, neuromuscular ageing, learning and memory and neurodegenerative disorders. My most recent work involved using a range of techniques including neuronal cell culture, electrophysiology, immunocytochemistry, and atomic force microscopy to investigate both the mechanisms of modulation of spinal cord neurons and networks and how these changes affect locomotor output. I also have ongoing projects investigating neuromuscular ageing and plasticity of the neuromuscular junction – the interface between the nervous system and skeletomuscular system.

Teaching

I have a passion for teaching biological sciences and in particular neuroscience. I have strong interests in research and development of online methods of teaching and assessment, specifically in the areas of experimental design and blended practical delivery. I’m a strong believer in facilitating engagement through technology enabled processes, maximizing opportunity for higher level learning. As such I seek to develop a more blended approach to science delivery within my own practice and to promote its use more widely.
